Almost everyone who uses cannabis regularly has either done it or watched someone else do it: one edible too many, an unfamiliar concentrate, a dab on an empty stomach — and twenty minutes later someone is pale, sweating, convinced something is deeply wrong.
That state has a name. Greening out is the informal term for acute cannabis overconsumption: the cluster of physical and psychological symptoms that show up when you take in more THC than your body can comfortably handle in one sitting.

The typical symptom picture combines two tracks:

Slow, controlled breathing. This is the one thing that reaches the panic loop. Longer exhales than inhales shift autonomic tone away from the fight-or-flight state amplifying everything else.
Time-anchoring. Say out loud, or have someone say to you, that this is temporary, it is a known reaction, and it ends. The derealization is often more distressing than any physical symptom, and naming it reduces its grip considerably.
CBD, cautiously. CBD acts as a negative allosteric modulator at CB1 — meaning it changes how THC binds rather than blocking it outright — and some people find it takes the edge off. The clinical evidence for rescuing an in-progress green out is thin, and CBD can slow THC clearance. Worth trying if it is on hand; not worth counting on.
Black pepper. Widely repeated, based on the shared terpene beta-caryophyllene, which does bind CB2 receptors. There is no controlled evidence it helps acute intoxication. Harmless, probably placebo, and placebo is not nothing when panic is the main symptom.
What does not help: caffeine, which worsens tachycardia and anxiety. More alcohol. Cold showers, which can provoke a stronger vasovagal response in someone already lightheaded. And driving — impairment persists well past the point where subjective panic fades, and that gap is where the real danger sits.
The prevention math
Nearly every green out traces back to one of four things:
- Dose stacking on edibles. The rule that prevents most cases: take one dose, wait a full two hours, then decide. Set a timer, because your sense of time is the first thing to go.
- Unknown potency. Illicit-market products carry no verified THC content, and the gap between labeled and actual potency in unregulated goods is often large in both directions. Lab-tested products from licensed retailers are the entire basis for knowing what you took.
