Every rosin press listing leads with the same number. Four ton. Six ton. Ten ton. Twenty ton. It is printed on the box, it is the first word in the product title, and it is the number almost every buyer sorts by.

It is also the number that tells you the least about what the press will actually do to your flower.

Tonnage is a rating of the jack. What determines whether your rosin runs clean or scorches is pressure per square inch at the bag — and PSI is tonnage divided by the area you spread it across. Widen the plates and the same jack delivers a fraction of the pressure. This is why a well-built 4-ton press with 3x5 plates can genuinely out-press a 12-ton press with oversized plates on the same gram of flower, and why the single most common mistake in home solventless is buying more tons than the plates can use.

Here is the math, then seven presses measured against it.

The one formula that reorders the whole category

Plate pressure is force divided by area:

PSI = (tons × 2,000) ÷ plate area in square inches

But you are not pressing the whole plate. You are pressing a bag, and the bag is what the force actually lands on. Run it on the real footprint of your material and the rankings scramble:

The 4-ton and the 12-ton land in the same place. The 12-ton costs two to three times more, weighs three times as much, and buys you exactly one thing the 4-ton does not have: the ability to press a larger bag at that same pressure. That is a throughput upgrade, not a quality upgrade.

The target range published across the solventless community has been stable for years:

  • Flower rosin: roughly 600–1,000 PSI at the bag
  • Hash and dry sift: roughly 300–600 PSI — noticeably less, because a full-melt bag blows out under flower pressure

Read that second line twice. The material most people buy a big press for is the material that wants the least pressure. Hash rosin is a temperature-and-technique problem, not a tonnage problem.

What tonnage does actually buy you

Three real things, none of them yield:

  1. Bag width. More force lets you keep PSI in range across a bigger footprint. A 10-ton press with 4x7 plates runs 14g bags in one pull where a 4-ton runs 3–7g.
  2. Pressure stability. Cheap jacks bleed off pressure mid-press. A jack running at 40% of rating holds a plateau better than one straining at 95%.
  3. Headroom for pre-press bricks. Denser, better-formed pucks need more force to break flow open.

If you press under 7 grams at a time — which describes most home extractors — none of the three is worth paying for.

What actually decides yield

Rank-ordered by how much each lever moves the number, based on the dial-in guidance that has converged across the space:

1. Material quality. Nothing else is close. Typical yields run about 10–20% for flower, 30–55% for quality bubble hash, and 40–70% for dry sift. No press moves flower into hash territory. 2. Temperature. Flower presses in the 180–220°F window. The bottom of that range (180–195°F) preserves more terpenes and yields less; the top yields more and drinks flavor. This is the real trade-off dial, and it is free.

3. Micron bag choice. For flower, 90–120 micron maximizes flow. For hash and kief, 25–37 micron keeps plant particulate out of the final product. The yield penalty for going finer is real but smaller than people expect — one commonly cited comparison put a 90-micron flower press at 20% against 17% on a 36-micron bag. Finer mesh can strand roughly 3–5% of potential yield in dense, dry flower.

4. Plate alignment and heat evenness. A misaligned 10-ton jack produces worse rosin than a square, evenly heated 5-ton. Cold corners are invisible in the spec sheet and obvious in the yield.

5. Tonnage. Last. Once you are inside the PSI band, more force does not add yield — it adds blowouts.

Small plates, roughly three-minute heat-up, and about 14 grams of capacity across a session. At 3x5 plates it lands squarely in the flower band with headroom to back off for hash. The heat-up time matters more day to day than any spec on this list — a press you wait fifteen minutes for is a press you use less.

Best for: the default home buyer who presses flower weekly and hash occasionally.

2. YFTOHI 10-Ton, 6x6 plates — best if you press volume

The 6x6 plates are the story, not the ten tons. Spread across that footprint the press sits near 960 PSI on a large bag — in range for flower, at the top edge for hash. Dual heat controllers, and the strongest review base in the category.

5. CRUSHANUG 7-Ton — best for hash and dry sift

Handles kief and sift better than the rest of this group, which comes down to pressure control at the low end. Hash wants 300–600 PSI, and the hard part is not reaching a pressure — it is holding a low one without spiking through a 25-micron bag.

A buying rule that fits in one line

Pick your bag size first, then buy the smallest press that puts that bag in the PSI band.

Working backward from output instead of forward from spec sheets:

  • Pressing 1–3g: a 4-ton with small plates is genuinely sufficient
  • Pressing 3–7g: 5–6 ton, 3x5 plates — the home sweet spot
  • Pressing 7–14g: 10 ton, 4x7 plates
  • Pressing more than that regularly: you are running a business, buy commercial

Three mistakes that cost more than the press

Buying tonnage instead of plates. Now covered at length, and it is the expensive one because it is unfixable after purchase — you cannot shrink plates.

Skipping the pre-press mold. A loose bag channels: the rosin finds one weak point and blows out sideways instead of pressing evenly. A $20 mold reliably outperforms $200 of extra jack.

Chasing yield with heat. Running 230°F+ will raise the number on the scale and produce dark, flat rosin. The terpenes that make solventless worth the effort start leaving in the 190s. If yield is the only goal, solvent extraction is more efficient — the entire point of rosin is what survives.

Is pressing at home actually cheaper?

Sometimes, and the break-even is less flattering than press marketing suggests.

At a 15% flower yield, an ounce of decent flower yields roughly 4.2 grams of rosin. Compare that against dispensary rosin pricing in your market and the arithmetic is straightforward — but the input flower has to be good enough to be worth pressing, and good flower is not cheap. The economics work best for people who already buy quality flower in volume, and worst for anyone buying flower specifically to press.

The honest case for a home press is control: your temperature, your micron, your material, pressed fresh. Not savings. The bottom line

The rosin press market sells tonnage because tonnage is a single number that sorts cleanly in a product grid. Yield does not work that way.
